Vox’s new Night Train NT15H Head is a busy, all-tube-loving guitarist’s dream come true. This 15-Watt head weighs a little less than seventeen pounds, and is barely over a foot wide and six inches deep. The Night Train is equipped with two 12AX7 Preamp Tubes and two EL84 Power Tubes, giving you the pristine cleans and tough overdrive of the larger Vox models, particularly the AC15.
The Night Train is a single channel, and has the typical tone controls. There are separate Gain and Volume controls, so you can set the gain right where you want it, but play at any volume without losing your tone. A Bright/Thick switch has been wired into the Gain/Preamp section. The Bright mode clears up your tone, while the Thick mode increases the gain even more. Treble, Mid, and Bass controls allow you to dive in even further, finding the exact tone for you.
Another switch on the front panel allows you to choose between Pentode and Triode options. The Pentode mode plays at the full 15-Watts that the Night Train is meant for. The Triode mode lowers the wattage by half, playing at 7.5-watts. This allows you to push those tubes hotter at a slightly lower volume. Lastly, dual output jacks in the rear panel of the amp allow you free-range to choose any 8-Ohm or 16-Ohm speaker cabinet.
